As any class teacher knows, it’s not easy getting a class of kids to listen to music with concentration. LISTENING OK! has a GENERAL LISTENING SHEET, cunningly devised so that kids have lots of little boxes to fill in whilst listening to any music of the teacher’s choice. This, of course, keeps them from chatting and fidgeting as they respond to various aspects of the music - the speed, dynamics, timbres, etc. Pupils are also asked to give their opinion of the music, which may lead to class discussion.
There is also a useful LISTENING GUIDE, which has no less that 20 chapters, giving facts about the elements of music, and brief outlines of the periods of music history. Sit your GCSE/Standard Grade (or early A-level) classes in front of the CD player armed with the guide and a choice of your own CDs, and it will help them to understand what’s happening in the music. Give them a copy to take home for exam revision or homework. There is even a set of questions relating to each chapter to help the revision process.
The LISTENING DIARY encourages pupils to listen to many styles of music in and out of school. They fill in a sheet with the date whenever they listen to music in a variety of different styles, and comment on their listening experiences. The revision questions help your pupils to understand the concepts covered in the course.
