“....Did you hear how the two halves of the rhythm seemed to sound balanced? If you were to imagine the first two bars as being a QUESTION, then the last two bars would be a sort of ANSWER. Listen to example 2 played in the same way. As you listen, follow the printed music.......”

AT LAST! Much needed practical, essential help for teaching COMPOSING SKILLS at KS3 and KS4.

Features 2 CDs with 4 composing lessons - ready-made spoken lessons on CD, packed with  musical examples and extracts of specially composed music. Each lesson is 20 - 30 mins long.

PLUS photocopiable sheets for your pupils to refer to while listening to the recorded lessons (encourages them to follow simple scores).

PLUS a full script (including detailed timing information and ideas for extension work) of the lessons so teachers can prepare additional lesson material (if desired).

Devised by Jon Raybould, an experienced composer and class music teacher, the lessons are presented with a friendly, informative voice.

The content of each lesson is steadily progressive, and full explanations are given at every stage of the lessons.

FLEXIBLE  Aware that every school has its own unique facilities (equipment, space etc), the lessons are designed to be highly flexible. For instance, teachers can opt to play the whole of each lesson, or just part of a lesson to illustrate a particular point - or they can pause during a lesson to add their own individual teaching points. Each lesson concludes with a statement like “I’ll hand you back to your teacher so you can be organised according to your particular situation....”

IDEAL FOR MIXED ABILITY CLASSES During each lesson, the presenter Jon Raybould plays many of his own short compositions as examples, many of which were composed using computer software and multitimbral synthesizers, explaining how he went about composing them. His compositions vary greatly in complexity, showing what could be done by the able and not so able pupil. The class is then encouraged to “go away and compose yourself”, basing their compositions on the examples just heard.
