Now, just like before, I’m going to play this bass line and improvise a tune over it. Listen while I experiment: XXXXXXX

OK... Not too happy with that, so I’ll try again. XXXXXXXX

Ah, I liked that a little better. I think one of the reasons for that is that I used some off-beat rhythms in there. Listen to that again, especially the last two bars, which seems to remind me of a sort of Calypso effect: XXXXX. The musical word for these off-beat rhythms is SYNCOPATION. And I think syncopation here gives the tune a rather special character......

The idea is simple:  composer Jon Raybould sits in his recording studio and composes three brand new pieces. And throughout every stage, he gives a running commentary explaining what he’s doing.

Your pupils will see (and hear!) how each piece develops from the very first ideas to the completed composition.
e
Jon, an experienced composer and class music teacher, puts his mind into the way a school pupil thinks - and builds his pieces with the help of sampled sounds and music sequencing software.

The 3 pieces are:
1. Autumn - a short flowing piece in ternary form, composed by improvising a melody over a simple chord sequence.

2. STOMP! - a lively piece based on a BASS RIFF, with a strong percussive rhythmic accompaniment.

3. Bluesy Woosie - a piece based on a 12 - bar blues chord sequence. Jon first composes the piece using just a piano; later he uses sequencing software to add other instruments.
